how I use categories on chromasia

All the entries on chromasia are placed into one of seven primary categories: six to reflect the aspect ratio of the image, and the seventh to indicate that an image isn’t available as a print. Additionally, each photograph may be assigned to one of more additional categories or subcategories, e.g. my travel category, children category, and so on.

about the ‘2.39x1’ category

All images in this category have an aspect ratio of 2.39x1.

This was taken from the same vantage point as the shot I posted a couple of days ago - the 42nd floor of the Shangri-la hotel on Sheik Zayed Road - and while there are a few things I don't like about it (more of which below), on the whole I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Aesthetically, I don't think it quite works - the composition is a bit messy - and I would have preferred a more interesting sky and a bit less haze, but on the whole I thought it was worth posting.

I've been down to the mosque at Abu Dhabi quite a few times in the last few years but have never come away with any shots that I felt like sharing until this trip. Of the few I'll be posting I think this is probably my favourite, a shot of the internal courtyard at sunset, constructed from 5 stitched images.

As a counterpoint to yesterday's portrait of Finn - which didn't really show him off at his best - here's one I took about a minute earlier.

This is the first of two shots of this isolated restaurant we drove past while touring around Oman. I suspect it would look better as a large print than it does here - a lot of the interesting detail isn't visible - but I'm relatively pleased with how it turned out.

This is the second shot I mentioned yesterday, and while it doesn't do quite such a good job of describing the context - the fact that this is a rooftop washing line - it's definitely my favourite of the two.

I'm heading back to the UK today after another fabulous GPP event out here in Dubai. I met some great people, and got some great shots - most of which I'll post over the coming weeks, along with a detailed summary of the event - but I'll be glad to get home to Libby and the kids.

On which note, I better start packing as my hotel room is currently scattered with kit :)

This is a companion shot to this one, taken during our photo tour to the Venice Carnival back in February. If you're interested we'll be heading back there again next February for another five day photo tour. If you think you'd be interested in joining us take a look at this page for further details. Oh, and let me know what you think of this shot too :)

This is another image from our balloon trip on Sunday morning, taken not long after dawn. It was shot in the desert near Dubai, but the mountains you can see along the horizon are in Oman, the location for our Faces and Places Photo Tour that starts tomorrow evening.

It was the first day of my Landscape Photography workshop yesterday – and I'll probably have one or two images to post at some point soon – but in the meanwhile I thought I'd post this one, taken down on the beach last night. The postproduction, as you'll see, was fairly straightforward – just a bit of a contrast and saturation boost and a crop.

As always, let me know what you think.

This is the first of two pre-dawn images from Venice. The one I'll post next was shot from the shore, but this one was taken from the waterbus. It's not entirely sharp, and the original was a bit noisy, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

As for the moon ...

It was in the original shot, but as I wanted to use a panoramic crop for this one I decided to move it rather than lose it altogether.
