I did think that I ought to be able to come up with a clever title for this one, but I really couldn't think of anything, so if you do have any suggestions please let me know.

Anyway, this is the first of four shots taken in Collins, a former DIY and wallpaper shop, one of the various empty properties I mentioned the other day.

Of the ten shots in this small series, this and tomorrow's are my favourites so I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on both.

Oh love this. Has a great mood. Looks like a prop lit by and from a theatre set. Very moody, found in the same building? Mad. Perfect light and great choice to go B & W.

comment by Ojorojo at 08:24 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Very nice b&w!!

comment by Neil at 08:32 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

the subtle vignetting really works here and draws one in to the scene-- along with the direct lighting from above, it's as if this DIY once doubled as an interrogation room. Interesting shot.

comment by Darren at 08:38 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Is that natural lighting?

Natural or not, it's wonderful.

comment by djn1 at 08:44 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

mooch: no, this is the DIY shop.

Darren: yes, it's natural light.

comment by Les at 08:47 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Title ideas: Chair Unfurled, Soft Seat

Sometimes background clutter can significantly distract from the focus. In this, I believe every element adds diminision, tells a little more of the story. The B&W also fits better than believe color would.

I love the soft light in this shot and keeping things in black and white makes most of the subject matter. I really like this one.

comment by Mal at 09:00 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

How about "Andrex"

Lovely lighing. Mal

comment by Andrew at 09:00 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

This is superb - an image that strikes you as fantastic as soon as you open it. The lighting is perfect.

comment by nferreira at 09:07 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

The light is very well balanced. I thought it was from a custom set in your house or in a studio. A photo well explored. :-)

comment by Andrew Parker at 09:12 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

;-) How about "The Final Roll.", or "Forgot the Paste..."?
Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Wonderful shot. This is much more like what I was expecting you to post, when you first mentioned your new project. This is moody, and a smidgen theatrical (I gree with mooch on that one). Did you consider softening the light any more?

comment by A N D Y T Y E at 09:17 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Another moody shot. I absolute love this. Great atmosphere, and good composition...

comment by John at 09:30 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Nice b&w processing. Wonderful tones.

comment by djn1 at 09:32 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Thanks for the title suggestions :-)

Andrew: it's good to hear you have high expectations, but unfortunately I probably didn't make as much of the light as I could have done. I'm hoping to go back again some time soon so will try and shoot some more material that's congruent with my style.

comment by djn1 at 09:35 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Oh, and yes, I did think about playing around a bit more with this one to soften the light, but decided I preferred it as a reasonably straight shot.

comment by Andrew at 09:44 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Is the vignetting added via the lens correction filter in Photoshop? (I'm just trying to get a sneek preview into your processing and the forthcoming tutorials!)

comment by Damian at 09:46 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

I like this although I share the view it does look like an interogation scene. Although knowing the setting and context of the previous images this has a feeling of hope.

comment by djn1 at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Andrew: no, it was added by using a masked Curve - and this is something I'll be talking about in the tutorials ;-)

Damian: yes, this one isn't quite so bleak as the previous few I've put up.

'wraped legs' (in italian it sounds good, but i'm not sure if it is the same in english). a big kiss from italy, david. alice

Really great shot. the B&W works beautifully.

comment by Ries at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Absolute perfect lighting! The atmosphere is great in B&W. Beautiful subject.

comment by Mark at 10:30 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

Dave, this is a marvelous image. The tones and composition are strking. I love the story the image tells. Mystery and texture.

comment by spans' snaps at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

For me this is perfect!

comment by Arthur at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

When I saw the other shots, I must say I thought I wouldn’t bother visiting for a week-or-so...

I’m glad I did today!

very desolate mood. good work with the lighting.

comment by wesley hargrove at 11:58 PM (GMT) on 23 October, 2006

awesome light. great job dave.

comment by Robert at 01:53 AM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Great shadows, and with the theatrical feel mentioned earlier, you could call it "End of the show." Of course, untitled works fine, as the image has plenty of feeling without needing an explanatory title.

comment by Anil at 02:17 AM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

This is beautiful shot...a perfect photo for b/w. Love the ligh in this.

comment by Gabriel Loeb at 03:20 AM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

This is awesome. A truly massive improvement over yesterday's image. I think what really pulls this over the top is the abstract nature of the shot. The light is amazing and the black and white gives it a great mood; but I think your decision (whether conscious or otherwise) to omit all other elements from the frame was a very wise one, and probably the most important one that was made in the taking of this picture. Fantastic work, David. This is why I can't stop coming back.

Fantastic light - best of the series. How about 'Chairs and thanks for the memories'?!

comment by Yalda at 11:51 AM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Very great atmosphere... lovely lighting

comment by Paul Courtney at 12:21 PM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Hi Dave,
You've brought a great mood to this shot. It almost seems as though someone was cut short mid-decorating session and have just abandoned their stuff.
For the title, how about ' Flock in Hell' !!!
Cheers,

comment by Alice at 02:29 PM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Beautiful lighting. I love the mood it creates. And great choice on the B&W. Great job!

a absolutely superb image. i love it.

comment by Gabriel McIntosh at 05:38 PM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Very dramatic, great contrast without losing the midtones and highlights. This image makes the ordinary interesting.

comment by Chad Hilligoss at 06:00 PM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

I agree with Neil, this feels like an abandoned interrogation room. I love the hair light and toning. Did you bring in your own strobes , or was the light already there?

comment by djn1 at 08:00 PM (GMT) on 24 October, 2006

Thanks all.

Chad: this was lit by available light.

love this image - how about "I'll finish it tomorrow"

comment by steve at 01:34 AM (GMT) on 25 October, 2006

ok, just commented on the previous pic working best for me (in regards to this series), changed my mind. this one works. as a picture, as a statement. i don't need context or a back story to understand this. well done.

comment by Seairth Jacobs at 02:12 AM (GMT) on 25 October, 2006

"we've decided to go with a different look"

comment by Dorene at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2006

I enjoy the simplicity of this photo and that you chose to use b&w. How about "all dressed up and no where to go"?

You are an incredible photographer.

comment by Sil at 05:46 PM (GMT) on 24 November, 2006

I really like this (especially in the black theme) - as someone else said, looks like it is from a theater, just waiting for the actor to enter.

comment by Yulia at 04:07 PM (GMT) on 3 December, 2006

This is really beautiful: the textures of materials and light are absolutely great!
I am curious how this looked in colour, but I can see why you chose to go with black and white.
