On my way home from work today I detoured via St. Annes and took a few shots of this structure. It's a hundred yards or so beyond the end of the pier and I presume it's some sort of mooring point. I'll probably try and go again tomorrow and see whether I can capture some of the details that I missed today – the wood, metalwork, and so on. I did take a few shots today but messed most of them up. This one though, I quite like.

I like how the stark silhouette is countered by the reflected image with all its complexity.

beautiful bleakness to this shot.

sorta reminds me of the film "Northfork" (great visuals in that film).

When I first looked at this, I though it might be desaturated and toned, but now I'm thinking this almost monotone color is natural. Which is it!? :-)

David: I hope you wipe your shoes before you go in the house (or the car) :)
Anyway, I love the detail in the reflection. Good way to split the image up as well. .. I like this.

Great shot; really nice symmetry.

comment by djn1 at 11:23 PM (GMT) on 11 November, 2004

tristan: I haven't seen it - I'll check it out.

kyle: actually, I increased the saturation (slightly) - the light was extremely flat this afternoon.

miklos: no, our house and car are always covered in sand :-)

David; Very powerfull image. It works..
Got any shots on a angle... off center..

Louis: thanks.

"Got any shots on a angle… off center.."

Yes, but they're all crap. I'll see if I can go by there again tomorrow.

Everything is so symmetrical and so centered, yet it's just fascinating and I can't stop looking at it.

Is cursing allowed on your site? I like this so much all I can think of is cursewords. :-)

Very good stuff
(And nice reflections too :) )

comment by ckozo at 03:42 PM (GMT) on 12 November, 2004

technically (focus, color, detail, etc.) it is a great shot. however, IMHO the composition and subject matter do not impress. not much of a story to be told with it.

I love the monochromatic feel . The structures on either side are intruiguing. Beautiful shot~

comment by miles at 05:00 PM (GMT) on 12 November, 2004

I like this, I like the feeling of it. I'd like to see it with a monochrome blue tint, I think the warm tones of the image conflict with the way I'm feeling it, I almost want to shudder looking at it!

Aha. This is in fact the remains of the end of St. Anne's pier which suffered a fire a long time ago - It used to go out into the Ribble estuary right up to this structure, the end of it. Thats what I was told in school anyway. Nice shot once again, themes of symmetry and reflection. Good quality to the colour composition i reckon - very much the grey/whitish sky meeting the flat expanse of sand that is typical of St. Annes.

At first look, I thought this was some kind of symmetry in photoshop job. An interesting structure - nice one.

What’s this? The foreground looks like the German mud-flats.
Nice shot!

I love the shots you do on the beach. Makes me want to move. The reflections in the water and the blank sky really make this shot for me.

Thanks everyone.

tiffany: by all means, be my guest ;-)

ckozo: for me, I guess the story is one of age and time.

miles: I did try a 'cold' version, but decided I didn't like it all that much. Perhaps you'll like tomorrow's a bit better.

Roy: thanks for the info.

picturegrl: I've just about got over my cold that's lingered on for the last couple of weeks so hope to take some more beach shots over the coming months. I'm thinking of doing some night shots if I can work out a good way of preventing my tripod from sinking in the sand :-)

this shot is perfectly lined up. almost like these moments were made for us to capture.

Great contrast!! Nice use of the rule of thirds. Well done.
