Here’s are some of the comments we received on our last course …
"Anyone out there who’s wondering whether or not to go on the course, DO IT! Thank you Dave (and John, and Libby, and everyone else). Had a brilliant time and hope to see you all again soon."
"Big thanks to you, John and Libby for an outstanding tutorial weekend. I learned more in the last three days than I have in the last eighteen months."
"What a pleasure spending the weekend with with a pair of competitive, generous photographers like youself and John. Really clear and inspiring. And Libby, thanks for keeping us in line and stuffed with food! Can’t recommend the course enough."
"Working through example images and, later on, my own images was what provided the real 'oh yeah' moments for me."
"Have already recommended the course to others!"
Our weekend training tutorials, run in the seaside resort of Blackpool in the North West of England, are arranged by David and Libby Nightingale with John Washington, and were established in 2006 following numerous enquiries from photographers who felt they were lacking the postprocessing skills required to produce an end result that matched either their vision or creative expectations.
With this in mind we will work with you to enable you to better understand the various ways in which Photoshop can be used to enhance your digital images. Our aim is simple: we want our students to walk away with that ‘Ah, that’s how you do it!’ feeling; from correctly exposing a digital photograph, through subsequent modifications in Photoshop, to the production of a final image that meets your creative expectations. During the weekends we will use images from chromasia, John Washington’s portfolio, and images taken by yourselves during your stay, to work through a range of techniques and approaches that will enable you achieve this aim.
Please note that we have limited our courses to a maximum of twelve students per weekend. This ensures that our tutor to student ratio doesn’t fall below six to one and that we can spend a good proportion of our time providing one-to-one tuition during both the photo shoots and post-processing sessions.
We have also allocated plenty of time during the weekends for more informal discussions, so, while you will leave having increased your knowledge of Photoshop, you will also have had the opportunity to discuss and debate issues of photography with like-minded people who will no doubt become friends.
Currently, we don’t have any firm dates for 2008, but if you would like us to keep you informed, please for further details.

Westfield House is a small hotel owned by our good friends, John and Jim Settle, and is situated in the bustling North shore of Blackpool, within two minutes walk of the seafront. The hotel is just a five-minute stroll from the town centre, bus and train stations, and just a few miles from Blackpool International Airport. Most rooms are en-suite, and all have a colour T.V. and tea and coffee making facilities. The ground floor has a sun lounge, dining room and bar, and there is nearby parking for those travelling by car. During our tutorial weekends, Westfield House is reserved exclusively for Chromasia’s guests. This ensures a friendly atmosphere and plenty of likeminded Company. Clients at our November ’06 tutorial weekend all commented on the friendliness of the hosts, and the welcoming atmosphere. |
Dave, a skilled and experienced lecturer, formed the now hugely popular Chromasia in February 2004. Since then, having posted an image-a-day for most of that period, Chromasia has developed from being an all-consuming passion and hobby into an internationally recognised company providing stock imagery, prints, commissions (to both private individuals and various corporate clients) and tutorials, both in-class and online (coming soon, watch this space!).
Dave’s photography is eclectic – portraits of his children, moody and dramatic beach scenes, washed-up items along the shore, night shots, and so on – but with all of these subjects his approach focuses upon constructing compelling and well-crafted images. In this sense, he sees Photoshop is a tool for getting from A to B, a means of realising a creative vision that spans the time between pressing the shutter and producing a final image.
John is currently teaching graphic design and digital photography, and has been a practicing artist since an early age. After running a graphic design company for many years he settled his creative practice in the area of photography after being inspired by chromasia.
His website, www.johnwashington.co.uk, is an eclectic mix of street portraiture, alternative scenes and abstracts. John refuses to be categorised, and it is this open minded approach that often reveals new techniques which he enjoys sharing with students.
John enjoys a good photographic debate and is contextually very strong, this means he can cater for those people who enjoy a good photographic debate or want pointing in the direction of personal photographic study. If you want to talk about aesthetics and subjectivity then spend some time in his company.
