5 February, 2010 // Tutorials update / Mini-PSDs

One of the things our subscribers have said that they find most useful are the layered PSD files that I include with each image-based tutorial. As such we're going to release an additional low res' PSD file every week from February 2010 onwards. Each image will be between 800px and 1000px wide, and will be selected from those that I have previously published on chromasia. They will be provided 'as is' - just the file, with little or no explanatory text - but will help you work out how each image was constructed. Annual subscribers and lifetime members can download these via the members' page.

For further details, and to take a look at the first set of Mini-PSDs, please take a look at the following page:

20 April, 2009 // Creative Point of View competition: the winners

Back in February we launched our Creative Point of View competition for the subscribers to our online tutorials. The first prize, worth almost $365.00, was a Lensbaby Composer and Lensbaby Optic Kit, while the second and third place prizes were Lensbaby vouchers, worth $150.00 and $100.00 respectively.

Here's what we said in the brief:

"All you need to do for this competition is post your best shot on the theme of 'creative point of view', which in this case we mean literally rather than metaphorically; i.e. we're looking for shots taken from unusual angles that reveal something about a particular scene that might otherwise be overlooked. For example, this might mean shooting upwards from the floor, or straight down at an object, or at a slant, and so on. In other words, don't just stand there and point your camera at the horizon, be creative. In this sense, this competition isn't about post-production skills (although these will be considered as part of the judging process), it's about using your camera in a creative way."

We had over 100 excellent entries, and numerous, often heated discussions about which should win, but in the end we manage to pick our three winners.

The first prize, a Lensbaby Composer and Lensbaby Optic Kit, goes to Mark Wadlington for his innovative shot of a Starbucks cup in a shopping trolley.

The second prize, a $150.00 Lensbaby voucher, goes to Will Pattison for his mountain bike in motion shot.

And last but not least, the third prize, a $100.00 Lensbaby voucher, goes to Claudine Aumeeruddy for her inverted reflection shot.

So, it's a big congratulations to the winners, and a very well done to everyone else.

16 January, 2009 // The Curves tutorial: catalan and spanish translations

Those of you who subscribed to our online tutorials from the outset will know that the first one we posted was the Tonal Range and the Curves Tool tutorial. Well, there are now two more versions: one in catalan and the other in spanish, both of which were translated by Eduard J. (atzu). Over the coming months we're hoping to translate all the tutorials, but in the meanwhile, if you do know anyone who a) speaks catalan or spanish, and b) would like to know more about the Curves tool, you know where to send them :)
