My aplogies, but this is another shot from last summer. I know I should be shooting some new material, but I feel as though the life has been sucked out of me this past week or so. And I've had enough of winter now: I need warmth, sun, time and just some general rest and relaxation. On which disjointed note I'm going to go hibernate until May ;-)

Great shot. Very 'Chromasia'. Particularly like the orange rust stain running down the post and what a fantastic sky! ;-) Roll on the summer!

comment by mark at 08:50 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Yep. it is very chromasia this one Dave...and you won't hear me complaining about that! It really is these shots that make the current greyness we have even more despairing though isn't it! :-(

comment by Ben Ungar at 09:07 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Wow, very nice summer shot!
You capture the essence of the beach on a clear summer day so well.
Brilliant colors, also!

comment by m at 09:19 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Not sure the sun will be out in May in your neck of the woods. Best wait till August ;-)

comment by Benjamin Riley at 09:26 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Great shot, I love the colors and the warmth. The DOF is perfect, not too much detail, but enough to be able to tell what is in the background. I can almost feel my feet in the sand.
I know how you feel about having the life sucked out of you. I try to post a picture everyday on my blog studio701.blogspot.com and it does become draining shooting a new picture everyday. Sometimes I hjave to go back to old pictures and give myself a break.

comment by Johan Hjerling at 09:58 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

The colors in this one are beautiful! Although it's a classic djn1 motif it stands out much more! I like it a lot!!

comment by ps at 10:04 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

summer, summer... i want summer :D

comment by David at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

This says Summer alright! I was going to ask how you got such good colours in Feb!

Take it easy,
David.

comment by ruthe at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

lol, know that feeling. Winter is bad! great shot provides hope for summer! Love the rust on the post contrasting with the sky, great colours

comment by Judith Polakoff at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

And I was going to comment that there sure are a lot of people on the beach in the middle of February! :) I also know how you feel about winter right about now. I've been feeling so uninspired by the weather lately that I can hardly pick up the camera anymore, so I'm also reverting to photos taken last year in the gentler seasons. Thank goodness it gets warm eventually!

Beautiful shot, by the way. :)

comment by Mike Dougan at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Fantastic shot with beautiful rich colours. I'd love to know some of your digital dark room techniques.

comment by Sharla at 12:39 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Oh, no, who stole the water?!! Whew! Sure is warm in here.

G-o-o-o-rgeous colors and so many of them! Each pixel seems to be a different color. Great composition, everything is perfectly placed.

Now, let's see, that's 85 or 86 more terrible shots still in your folder?

comment by Mike at 02:16 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

iiiiii love it. great color and sharpness in the foreground

comment by Ashish Sidapara at 03:23 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Great colors and a superb shot.

comment by Carter at 06:34 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Its a nice colorful summer shot indeed david. I prefer youre winter shots but thats just because im a depressing/depressed kinda guy :) keep up the good work

comment by Manish at 07:43 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Very good shot. Good clarity across the picture. Colors have also come good.

comment by James at 07:46 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Perfect, as usual. Im sure youve heard it before, but your work is an inspiration. Thank you for giving us something to work towards :)

comment by Nicolas at 07:58 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

It has a post, lots of sand and a dark blue sky, I must be on chromasia.

comment by Ahamed at 08:20 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

No apologies neccessary, a good photo is a good photo in any season. The detail on the post makes the image. A vertical composition with more blue sky and more post would be interesting to see as well.

comment by mike at 08:36 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

why are there always tractor tracks on Blackpool beach?
nice pic.

comment by mike at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

hi dave,

do you take many pictures of the seafront when the tide is high?
Might be nice to see some rough seas!

Mike.

Hi there, just been looking round yoru site and I think your images are just fantastic, in fact the word insperational comes to mind. As someone who is learning the craft of photography I just gasp and hope I can get to this standard.

Thanks!

John

Hi Dave,
Summer Dreams...
...makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
This is what epitomises Chromasia to me. The 'Nightingale Blue' skies, the pin-sharp detail, the interesting angles and the subtle juxtapositions. What more could we ask for than Sun, Sea, Sand, Surf and such simply sensational shots.

comment by Eirik at 12:53 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

I recently discovered your site, and have been clicking around for a while now. Amazing photography, great inspiration.

comment by Ellie at 12:54 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

this just oozes summer-ness. tis my favourite of the last few you have put up :-) take it easy, summer will soon be here. dont let critics get you down :-P
p.s. you are doing better than me, ive not posted a new photo in days!

comment by prasoon at 01:04 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

the sand looks great, the close up of that log is awesome n the sky - wow !!
overall, a great image with nice dof too :)

comment by Mikelangelo at 02:11 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

I reall like this one. I love the color/texture on the post! Contrasts nicely with the background. Pops out nicely.

comment by PlasticTV at 02:13 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

There's something peculiar about the lighting in this picture. The sun seems to be shining from high up behind you. Yet the details in the wooden post and the old rope look great and the colours wonderfully vibrant. Amazing!

comment by HiMY SYeD at 02:36 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Posting this one from the summer has a hint of vicariously illustrating man-made global warming / climate change on this oddly warm february day in Toronto....

comment by RyanT at 02:44 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

I don't dislike it, it's just not my favorite of yours. You have spoiled us!

comment by tristan forward at 03:36 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

its alive !

i'm sure that rusty tear-stained eye just winked at me ...

comment by Rob at 04:14 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Another cracking shot, the colours, composition and DoF are superb

comment by ROB at 09:13 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

If only the temperature could be shared, its summertime here and too hot today! Have to agree with the first few comments; classic Chromasia. Love it.

comment by Paul Woolrich at 09:44 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

David, This is a beautiful shot. The colours look so rich and warm and the mix of textures is great.

comment by djn1 at 09:54 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Thanks everyone, though I'm not especially pleased with myself for having to resort to posting stuff I shot last year :-/

comment by Gary at 11:19 PM (GMT) on 15 February, 2006

Great one Dave, makes me long for the summer:)

comment by Deb at 12:09 AM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end (Sonnet 60)

It was the knots that did it for me. A retrospective on the life of ....someone. A memento of existence. Sure, the solitary little sentinel of a stump was fashioned by a human hand at some point....and it radiates admirable nobility in its resistence to decay and dedication to duty...a testament to the artisan.....but it's the knots for me...they still bear that energy.

(I'm like this with mortar between bricks too....the finger that once stroked it into a sleek line.....I look at it in awe that I'm allowed direct access to living history)

(Don't you dare hibernate, Yogi. Jellystone would be a picnic-less place without you....and on a more egocentric note.... I would have to carry the burden of being the only hysteric in the building) :D

comment by JD at 09:32 AM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006

don't hibernate. Evolve.

I found it hard at first but think that I have a few shots on my site now that are working.

Most of the stuff comes out a little gloomy (which probably has more to do with the weather than anything), and I know this might be hard for your usual fans who want to see the safety shot.

I'm just gonna start shooting more portraits, which is good because its not like the time of year is going to harm this at all ;)

On this shot. Its good, I like the repitition of the rusty reds in the buildings, and obviously the detail on the wood with the DOF works well, but there is that feeling that I've already seen it, which for some is comforting, but I'm not sure.

comment by RustyJ at 06:11 PM (GMT) on 16 February, 2006

Heellllllooooooo David!!

Nice Shot my friend. We here in Vancouver have just finished breaking records for rain on the west coast of British Columbia! However for the last few days we have had son..

Enjoy your hibernation!
